What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

Answer Engine Optimization is the work of getting your business named inside the answers AI assistants give, not just ranked in a list of links.

Here is the short version, before the detail:

  1. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about being one of the three to five names an AI assistant says back when a buyer asks it for a recommendation.
  2. It is a new layer on top of search, not a replacement for it. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is another name for the same job.
  3. You can measure it: run the real questions buyers ask across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, and count where you land.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is making sure AI assistants name and recommend your business when someone asks them a question. When a buyer types “best joint supplement for senior dogs” into ChatGPT, the model gives an answer with a few brand names in it. AEO is the work of being one of those names.

There is no page two in an AI answer. The assistant gives a short list, and the buyer reads it. You are in that list, or the customer never hears about you.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO is about ranking a link so a person clicks it. AEO is about being the name the assistant says back, with no click required. The two draw from different signals.

Your search rank no longer decides whether AI names you. Most of the pages AI cites come from outside the top ten organic results, so a brand can rank first on Google and still be missing from the AI answer. We walk through the split in AEO vs SEO: hype, or the shift that's already here?

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Yes. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) name the same job: getting your business into the answer an AI gives. People use the two terms almost interchangeably. GEO came out of a 2023 research paper; AEO grew out of the SEO world. The work is the same either way.

How do you actually do AEO?

AI learns about your business from the web, and most of what it repeats comes from third-party sources, not your own site. So the work happens in four places:

  • Earn coverage in the publications AI cites for your category.
  • Build review volume on the platforms AI draws from, like Amazon, Trustpilot, and Reddit.
  • Fix your own pages so your product information and structured data are rich enough for AI to understand what you sell.
  • Match your language to how you want to be described, so AI repeats it.

The order matters, and it is different for every business. That is why the first step is to measure, not guess.

How do you measure AEO?

You measure it by running the real questions buyers ask across the AI models and reading where you land at each stage of the journey. A single “how often does AI mention me” number hides the truth, because the same brand can be invisible while a customer is learning the category and strong once they are comparing options.

That measurement is what an Adacity report does. We find the questions your buyers actually ask, run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude with live web search on, and show you where you stand, who AI names instead, and what to fix first. See how your report works for the seven things we measure, or why Adacity for how we compare to other tools.
